Vietnam Health Care and Vaccinations

There are excellent modern hospitals in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh, and health care centres in all provinces, but facilities are often limited and there is a lack of drugs. Health insurance is essential and should include coverage for emergency repatriation by air. Immediate cash payment is expected for services. Call 115 in case of a medical emergency.

Food and drink:
Water used for drinking, brushing teeth or making ice must first be boiled or disinfected by other means. However, bottled water is cheap and widely available, make sure the seal is unbroken before drinking. Unpasteurised milk should be boiled. However, pasteurized milk is widespread. Avoid dairy products as they are likely to be made from unboiled milk. Eat only cooked meat and fish, preferably served hot. Vegetables should be cooked, and fruit peeled.

Other risks:
Vaccinations against tuberculosis and hepatitis B are sometimes necessary. Dengue continues to be a problem, and one should protect against mosquito bites. Japanese encephalitis is found in Northern Vietnam, including Hanoi.
